On Onslaught

26 Feb

A friend stopped by yesterday while I was playing Wii Ware’s latest offering, Onslaught. For a moment, he thought I was playing The Conduit, and that got me thinking.

bold-onslaught-11I’ve made known my thoughts on The Conduit facing an impossible challenge, but Onslaught has impressed me. That’s saying a lot considering the game is a Japanese first-person shooter on Wii Ware. So, now I’m reconsidering my stance:

If Onslaught is any indication, The Conduit could be a legitimate critical success beyond being “good…for a Wii game.”

Proving the Old Axiom

Aside from the copy of Super Mario World that came with the Super Nintendo, Street Fighter IIis the first game that I can remember receiving (though my possession of it was shared with my brother, along with the SNES.)

I was never very good at the game. My brother would play Ryu and launch fireballs left and right. My cousin and I, too young (or stupid) to realize how to properly block, resorted to jumping over as many fireballs as we could.

Dhalsim was my favorite because he was skinny like me. His Stretch Armstrong attacks suited my limited abilities well.

I played Super Street Fighter II, one of the Alphas, and the Marvel VS Capcom games, but never really developed any skill in them, instead just picking characters I thought were cool and spamming all the moves I could figure out.

Street Fighter IV didn’t really have me all that excited prior to its release, but I’ve managed to log in a few hours on both the PS3 and 360 over the last week.

Phantasy with a “Ph”

11 Feb

A new semester and a new job have me slacking off from my blogging and reviewing duties. To break the streak of procrastination, I present to you my review of Phantasy Star IV, over at GamePositive+.

For eight bucks, you can enjoy a laid-back, yet solid RPG experience on your Wii. Not bad.

Also running eight dollars on the Wii is LIT, a new WiiWare puzzler with some nice motion controls and some clever level-design. It can get a bit frustrating here and there, but the game is definitely worth the investment. I’ll try to get out a review sometime soon, but not until I’m done with a game I’ve been eagerly awaiting: Retro Game Challenge.

RGC comes to my GameStop tomorrow, and I’m actually ahead of schedule with school and work for once so look forward to my next review of this new old game.
